The organizers plan to make the project an annual event so that students have the opportunity to solve real production problems and build a career during their studies.
The festival of industrial design and engineering "Art Engineering: Steel and Style" was held in Moscow for the first time. Students from 10 metropolitan colleges have developed design models of industrial equipment for companies residing in the Technopolis Moscow Special Economic zone (SEZ), from a control panel for a numerically controlled machine to a box for specialized cutting tools. This was reported in the press service of the Moscow Department of Education and Science.
"More than 70 students of technical and creative specialties, consisting of 10 teams, worked on the real tasks of existing production facilities. The guys did not just draw sketches, but created full-fledged layouts, taking into account the technological processes and requests of specific enterprises. As a result, the jury selected the four best projects in the main and special categories, and the winners got the opportunity to complete a one-month internship at SEZ JSCTechnopolis Moscow,” the press service of the department noted.
The winners of the festival were students of the Moscow College of Architecture and Urban Planning with a project for packaging and storing milling cutters for a CNC machine. They will complete a one-month internship at SEZ JSC “Technopolis Moscow”, where they will take part in solving new real-world problems under the guidance of experienced designers.
The jury also marked the participants in special nominations. The best prototype was awarded to students of the N.N. Godovikov Polytechnic College, who created a trolley for transporting and storing tool mandrels. The team of the Moscow State Educational Complex won in the "Teamwork" nomination. The students of the College of Architecture, Design and Reengineering No. 26 showed the best presentation.
The festival was also attended by students of IT. Moscow College of Information Technology, Moscow Industrial College, Ivan Fedorov Moscow Publishing and Printing College, I.F. Pavlov Polytechnic College No. 8 named after twice Hero of the Soviet Union, College of Automation and Information Technology No. 20 and P.A. Ovchinnikov Polytechnic College.
Maria Bukatina, a third-year student at the Moscow College of Architecture and Urban Planning, who is studying Design (by Industry), said that in seven days the participants went through the process of creating a product from the first sketches to the finished layout. The guys are grateful to the employees of the companies who became mentors for them, guided and suggested how current engineers and industrial designers think. Maria realized that in this profession it is not enough just to be able to draw or model — you need to understand the demands of real production and listen to the customer. The students gained teamwork experience in the face of tight deadlines. According to Maria, they did not just put their knowledge into practice, but created with their own hands something that will become part of the production.
The program of the festival
The work on the projects went on for a week. Each team in their college, under the guidance of a mentor, developed a concept, created a 3D model, and prepared for the product exhibition and the final defense of the project. The participants also had an excursion to the Technopolis Moscow SEZ and the practical training center for mechanical engineering, where they saw modern domestic equipment for metalworking. In addition, the students attended lectures and workshops by industrial designers and practitioners from the Moscow machine tool company Bivertech and the Kalashnikov Concern.
"Today's SEZ "Technopolis Moscow is a key center for the development of the high—tech industry. SEZ residents are focused on developing advanced solutions for microelectronics, robotics, machine tool manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, new materials production and other fields. Conducting such practice-oriented events allows students of Moscow colleges to go beyond the classroom and immerse themselves in solving specific production tasks. In turn, enterprises receive fresh ideas, as well as the potential opportunity to find new promising specialists in the team," the press service of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy noted.
